چکیده
Objective: To carry out an integrative literature review collecting findings on the longevity of dental amalgam, comparing them with composite resin. Methods: The PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and LILACS databases were used to search for scientific articles. For search, following keywords applied: Amalgam, Dental Restorations, Survival, Longevity, Failure. All descriptors combined each other using Boolean operator “AND” description MeSH/DeCs terms. After applying eligibility criteria, nine articles selected. Results: Several properties influence amalgam restorations, survival failure rates restorations varying across studies, disagreements over superiority resin or amalgam. main cause failures in is secondary caries and, some cases, only repair appears as a solution instead complete replacement material. Final considerations: Knowing that still present clinical practice professionals, well oral cavity large portion population, these must be evaluated individually, without bias toxicity release mercury by

Longevity of dental amalgam in comparison to composite materials
HEALTH POLITICAL BACKGROUND Caries is one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide. For (direct) restaurations of carious lesions, tooth-coloured composite materials are increasingly used. The compulsory health insurance pays for composite fillings in front teeth; in posterior teeth, patients have to bear the extra cost. SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND Amalgam is an alloy of mercury and other metals an...
متن کاملLongevity of Amalgam Build-Up Restorations in Endodontically Treated Teeth
Background and Aim: Restoration of endodontically treated teeth is one of the most important and challenging topics in restorative dentistry. Longevity of such restorations is an essential factor in treatment planning. Amalgam build-up is a conservative method for restoration of endodontically treated teeth. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the longevity of this type of restoration in endo...
متن کاملWear of dental amalgam.
The wear of cental amalgam was studied by single- and double-pass sliding and by a silicon carbide abrasion test. A dispersed amalgam showed significantly better resistance to two-body abrasion than the spherical amalgams tested. The wear amalgam was determined by resistance to penetration and by a ductile mode of surface failure over the load range studied. Differences in the wear of amalgam a...
متن کاملMicrostructure of dental amalgam.
Numerous studies have been done in the past to identify the phases present in dental amalgam. Both metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques have been used.-' Most researchers now presume that dental amalgam consists mainly of three phases. The original particle is an alloy of Ag, Sn, Cu, and sometimes Zn; the major portion is the compound Ag3Sn, which is often referred to as Py. After am...
متن کاملDental amalgam--environmental aspects.
Increasing knowledge about the risk of toxic effects caused by anthropogenic mercury accumulation in ecosystems has resulted in a growing pressure for reduction of the discharge of mercury waste. Consequently, the mercury waste problems of dental clinics have been given increased attention, and restrictions on handling and discharge of contaminated waste have been established in several countri...
